Super Dog

I don't think it is uncommon to see dead animals on the expressway. Just a month or two ago, I was unfortunate enough to witness a pile of cat on the fly over. Yes, a pile of cat, because it was squashed out of shape that you could hardly recognize that it was a cat before the accident. Felicia and I only managed to tell from the patches of fur that stuck out from the flattened pile of meat - it was a disturbing sight. On other occasions, she has reported to have seen giant iguanas, and a dead monkey once. But whatever it is, dogs seem to be always the ones crossing the expressway and then getting banged down in the process. Perhaps they are always trying to get somewhere, and the expressway is just another obstacle they have to cross. I have seen dogs waiting for the cars to stop at the traffic light before crossing with the humans, and that was a pretty sight. And as for those poor dogs that are not so lucky on the expressway, I feel sorry for them whenever I see their body parts strewn across the tarmac road. I say a silent prayer, and hope that they find their ways to dog heaven safely. It's strange that I find the idea of a dog heaven more probable than a heaven for humans. I suppose I've seen too many acts by mankind to believe that a heaven is possible for us.

Anyway, once in a while you come across things that make you feel happy for the rest of the day, and this is the one for me. This video below was captured by a man in Chile, the heroic act of one stray dog trying to save another who got hit by a passing car. As my mother would testify, the video below is going to give you the chills, because it's one of those amazing animal videos that you don't see everyday. When someone is said to be "barking like a dog", we are usually trying to say that that person is being uncivilized, or acting like an animal. But here we have a stray dog, rescuing another stray dog, being involved in an act that would normally be associated only with rational beings, like us humans. Then you look at the news, you see the reports on the Mumbai terrorist attacks and all those humans killing other humans because of the most silly reasons (in the case of the Mumbai attacks, religion). You can't help but wonder if our status of being the most intelligent species of animals on Earth is being threatened, if we really are as superior as we make ourselves out to be. The truth is, we are no different from the most intelligent of chimpanzees, and this heroic dog just slapped a lot of self-centered human beings in the face. If a dog can risk its life for another stray dog, I don't suppose humans have any reasons, as rational beings, to commit crimes against one another for selfish reasons.

The saddest part about this video is that, according to the authorities, the dog that got hit by the car did not survive when the crew arrived at the scene. People who watched the video were moved by the heroic act of this stray dog, and called the authorities to ask if they could adopt it. Sadly, shortly after rescuing the other dog and pulling it out of harm's way, it disappeared into the bushes and was never found again. Animals are just so amazing, I really do love animals. Their simple-mindedness is like that of a child at times, and they do not need to have a reason to do things like, say, helping out a friend in jeopardy. They just do it without questioning, because it is in their instincts to do so. As much as I have taken a liking to cats these days, I still think dogs are better than cats in so many ways. Seriously, this video is just awesome. Superb example of why a lot of humans are lower than animals.
