There and Back Again Part VII: Loose Ends
So came the end of our training in India,as we tied up the loose ends of the stay. After more than a week of training, terrible food poisoning amongst the guys(Myself included)and half our lungs filled with sand and dust,we welcomed the end of the training with opened arms.
Burn,Mofo.Burn!
The end of it all was marked by a little party.Food, drinks and the inevitable:Girls. They actually hired three Indian ladies to come all the way to our camp and have a little dance routine up on 'stage'.
Our military band faded in comparison to Indian Army's.They pulled off an interesting performance definitely.
Bang bang.
Marcus going Bollywood.
So with the Indian music blaring over the cold night air,the lot of us set the big rock down on the ground, finally able to breathe again. The indian troopers got particularly excited at one point, and joined the ladies up on stage for some stupid dances.I couldnt take the noise,or the music,or the stupidity the people from my company was displaying. So myself and my bunkmates retreated to our bunks to play cards. We knew full well that it's illegal to play cards, but to hell with that.First of all,the show totally sucked, save for the fact that it marked the end of everything.Secondly,we deviced a plan to tell whoever that catches us playing the cards."Fortune telling",Reece said."They will believe that."
A game of cards.
However stupid that excuse sounded,i couldnt think of a better one than that.So that's the way it was back then.
The third worst part of the India trip soon came along when we had to pack up.I started throwing away old clothes and boots to lighten the load.I was on a wardrobe throwing frenzy back then,as i dumped almost everything ive worn into a trash bag i brought along. The rest of the guys spent the rest of the day playing cards, eating biscuits and sleeping away.It felt kinda weird,to just fall asleep knowing that there's nothing installed for you later on in the day. It's one of those after-effects like the ones you get after exams i guess.Like,"I should be doing something, right? But what?" kinda thing. It was strange, but i welcomed the strangeness of it all with my blankets over my body and eyelids over my eyes.
We left the camp on Friday morning, and the lot of us gathered with our bags and loaded up onto the bus.It was exciting,to finally say goodbye to the place.Come to think about it,i kinda enjoyed my stay in India, though it was all for the sake of training and stuff. It was nice,to be in a different place training i guess,it's a refreshing feeling i guess, with everything around you totally different from what you are so used to back home.
Departure.
The buses left, and slowly the gate to our camp disappeared from view.We left the camp, then out of Babina itself. The same old locals at the outskirts of Babina stared back at us,with the same blankness in their eyes.
I plucked in my iPod,and was exhaustion finally overcame,as i snored away softly in my seat next to Jonathan.
