Good Friday Badness
Being a non-christian,Good Friday to me is not a day when Jesus sacrifised himself for the sins of men,but more like a day where i can relax my brain and muscles, surfing the net with good music playing from the speakers and a good cup of coffee in my left hand.
It would also be nice,if there's a good movie on tv that night, and that i can watch it with my parents, pondering over the plot of the movie, totally immersed in this other world. So there i was this afternoon surfing through the channels when i stumbled upon the advertisement for The Passion of the Christ showing on Star Movies tonight.I've watched it before, though. But i remember the last time i watched it it was of poor quality, and that i never had the interest or the maturity to watch the film.Besides,i didnt like The Hours initially, but look where i am now being a fan of that film.
Anyway,so i decided to give that film another chance. At 9pm i was in front of the television, all stationed and geared up for a potentially good movie.Afterall,it's by Mel Gibson, the dude who directed Braveheart, one of my all-time favourites.
Now,you would expect one of the most well-known stories known to mankind to be rather interesting.I mean,it must be.Right?Or else how the hell did it get into the minds of believers and non-believers?Well,if you think that way about the story of Christ,or rather Mel Gibson's version of the story, then you are sadly wrong about it.The movie,in a word, was dreadful.
Let me just break the whole movie down.It was a wonderful collection of Matrix-like slow motion scenes,Latin and Aramaic dialogues, badly wounded man falling down a dozen times and blood, and lots of that. That basically sums up the core of the movie.I found it hard to feel the Good Friday spirit, the emotional impact the movie was supposed to have on me.The only emotion i had, perhaps, was the fact that i wanted to smash the television with the remote control.
With the above mentioned aspects of the film, stretch those out into a 127 minutes long feature film. Here's the little break down of the time line of the whole movie. The first 40 minutes were devoted to the trial of Jesus, how he was accused of blasphemy and at the very end, charged with death. The next 10 minutes were devoted to torture, the infamous scene of some good-o blood splashing action. The next 40 minutes were devoted to Jesus carrying the big ass cross walking through the streets of Jerusaleum, falling down a million times. The next 10 minutes was devoted to him being nailed onto the cross, lots of slow motions here. Then the next 10 minutes was devoted to how the temple was destroyed and him coming back to life.
I swear, that i actually timed every scene in the movie, and that was the break down.Totally boring, absolutely trash of a movie.Just what the hell was Mel Gibson thinking,God knows. If Jesus is watching this movie on this Good Friday evening as well,he wouldve probably beed a tad bit disappointed with the way Gibson shot this film.Afterall,if what the Gospel of Judas is right, then the film portrayed Judas wrongly.Oh well, the whole experience single-handedly destroyed my Good Friday evening, which made this holiday,a very very bad one.
An example of a good day turned bad,all because some lunatic decided to torture Jesus in slow-motion.Gruesome,only because it was so damn bad.
