Book Hunter Me
I dont think that there is a crazier, more persistant, stubborn book lover out there other than me.I dont think i am a hardcore book reader, since i do experience dry-spells when it comes to books. You know those times when you just pick up a book, read about five pages and tosses it back onto the shelf?I am somewhat of that sort of person, sometimes. That is especially so after reading a great, brilliant novel, like what happened after i read The Kite Runner. It was so great that everything else afterwards became rather boring.
But anyway,i was desperate to head on out this afternoon.Initially,i wanted to head for the White Tangerine,to see how their gigs go on and stuff. But since Ahmad's out doing some charity work with his mother(Dont even start asking me why the hell he is doing those things),i didnt see the point of me going there alone.
Anyway,so i headed to down,a place i havent been to in a while honestly.I had my mind set,as i headed to Kinokuniya first.I had this mental checklist of the things i wanted to buy,and that included Michael Cunningham's "The Hours",Markus Zusak's "The Book Thief",Richard Linklater's film "Waking Life",and whatever that catches me eyes off the shelves.
So i got there, headed to the Literature section, and couldnt find The Hours. It's funny how the book's the most famous book by Cunningham, and they dont even have it.It wont a Pulitzer Prize for God's sake!I stood under section A03-01 for the longest time, looking at the books wondering if anybody slotted the book somewhere other than its allocated place. But no,i couldnt find it.Not even in the "D" section.Right then,i got desperate.I checked the Kinokuniya database and asked the Information Counter, they all said that they have ONE book left, and they all pointed me to A03-01.Well i tried that, genius. Why do you think i am HERE to ask you about the book if i hadnt tried the way you already suggested?
I was rather pissed off for the fact that i couldnt find BOTH the books i wanted at Kino,or Borders. It was really frustrating for me,but what the hell, what turned me off more was the gathering clouds above.Rain and Orchard Road dont come together, seriously.
I didnt get my hands on Richard Linklater's movie either. After a few net surfing back home i realised that this movie was never even released in Singapore. What a shame, though.I couldve been a cult hit of some kind.Richard Linklater's the director of Before Sunrise and Before Sunset, and this movie is about a guy who is stuck in his dreams for some reason. In his dreams he meets different people, who talks to him about dreams, life, philosophies and a hell lot of other things that make you question the difference between the dream world and the reality.Damn, god bless arthouse films.
Well,i headed on home with a headache,Michael Cunningham's "Specimen Days" and Kazuo Ishiguro's "Nevet Let Me Go".Not too sure if they are any good, but let's just say i was desperate and frustrated.
PS. The sight of a monk in the middle of Orchard Road, surrounded by young teenagers in sleeveless tops and skirts was pretty fascinating.I wonder if temptation was an issue as he took a stroll down the street.Mustve been hard on you, bald one.Hahahahaha.
